A long time ago, a species called Two Canes ruled the world of Sisa. They were second only to the gods and they built many great wonders with marvelous tools. But that was a long time ago, before the gods brought retribution down on them, before the sun fell into the sea and the moon was split into the Moon of Light and Moon of Shadow. Very few records exist from that time.
Now the dominant species on Sisa are the Ribika - descendants of the Cats who obeyed the Two Canes. They don't have the technological secrets of Two Canes, but they get by, somehow. Life has become gradually more difficult for them, primarily because of the Sickness and the Void.
The Sickness is a mysterious illness with no known origin or cure. It causes body parts to disappear suddenly, as if they were never there, and it continues consuming a person until they die. Female Ribika are much more likely to contract the Sickness, so females are currently scarce (but not extinct).
The Void is an infection of the forests all across Sisa. Anything natural infected with the Void - the plants, the animals - becomes harmful to the Ribika, wounding them at the slightest touch. Not all forests are infected, and most only partially infected, but a mostly-infected forest may be impossible to traverse without knowing the safe paths.
blah blah blah gay sad catpeople
1. RibikaYour standard catboys and catgirls. They have cat ears on the top of their heads and tails - the tails are especially sensitive. They can be different kinds of cats - big cats, small cats, etc. Most cats come from small village - the biggest city on Sisa is the city of Ransen, the capital of Sisa where cats live in the ruins of human buildings. The Sickness and Void haven't reached Ransen quite yet.
They have some animal instincts - grooming, keeping territory - and are affected by catnip in the way you'd expect. They have a mating season, the effects of which are especially potent if you're near a cat you're compatible with.
There are two kinds of cats, who usually fight in pairs: a Sanga and a Touga. A Sanga is capable of using a 'song' to bolster the abilities of their Touga partner. It doesn't have to be literally sung - it can be played on an instrument, created in more peculiar ways, or in the case of some powerful Sangas, simply brought forth from their heart. The strength of the song is based on the strength of the bond between the Sanga and the Touga - it's impossible to sing for someone you don't really know. The Sanga is vulnerable when singing, so the Touga has to be able to protect them as well as defeat the enemy.
Some cats are capable of outright sorcery, but it's a rare talent.
2. DevilsAnd then there's these guys. Someone who dies - human or cat - while feeling a single emotion incredibly strongly may become the devil of that emotion. They have various magical powers, including control of an element and the ability to teleport. They are enormously powerful, so much so that they can split up their own power into shades of themselves to be in more than one place at a time, and they have servants of their own.
Devils can make contracts with cats. The forging of a contract can't be witnessed by anyone else or the contract is null. In exchange for a wish - I want power, I want revenge, etc. - the cat gives up their soul to torment after they die, forever, with no way to save themselves without the devil agreeing to let them go. They can also gain power by eating people. That's not fun either.
Devils are incapable of refusing their own desires and incapable of lying, but they are
very good at manipulating the truth to their own purposes. You should probably not trust them.
Some devils have been alive long enough to remember humans. They tend not to think of them very fondly. Happy lives don't produce devils.
They do have cool horns, though.
