They're talking (because they usually are) seriously (because they're usually serious) about something that Akutagawa quickly forgets in the wake of everything. Politics, maybe, or philosophy. It's a friendly argument, although it might look more serious to onlookers because their humor is so oblique.]
[And then there's something coming. It's a bicycle, so it wouldn't do much damage, but instinct is instinct. There's something coming down the sidewalk at Takiji, and it's going too fast and it's not quite distinguishable, so he just acts. Rashomon whips out and wraps tight around Takiji's closest arm, pulling him against Akutagawa's side, and then wraps around his chest several times over for good measure.]

[The thing is that Takiji thinks about a lot of things more than people expect him to. Even among writers - people known for putting events into words - he's a quiet one, and it's difficult to tell what he's thinking about until he brings it up later.
'Later' is in Akutagawa's home, in his bedroom. They end up here a lot, more so now that Akutagawa isn't precisely welcome in the library. So far things are normal, with Takiji leaning against Akutagawa's side in companionable silence that he's the first one to break.]
She adjusts the little paper crown the others gave her - it reads "trash monarch" - and leads him into her room. She'd rather not think about the fact that Danny's room used to be occupied. Then she puts the box of cards on top of the dresser, trying too hard not to look at the other personal effects in the room.
