[Blinks. Examines her leaves and root-walks over to Evangeline.]

I'm not exactly sure how to react to that! You haven't taken any strange potions recently, have you? [Feels her forehead.]

[She hums, and finding nothing out of the ordinary, removes her hand.] As long as you aren't sick or poisoned! I'll remember that, Evangeline. I'm Rakel Engsyre. I suppose I don't know much about emotions, all things considered, but your response simply seemed out of the ordinary.

I've heard that before. But weird people are more interesting, right?

I do find that's true! At the very least, weird people are likely to either get along or very much not get along, depending on their individual weirdness.

I'm pretty easy to get along with, I think? So we should be good friends.

Let's see... At home I work for a company that extracts energy by working with monsters? So that's interesting, I guess. Kind of sucks as a workplace though.

[leafygreen]

Energy from monsters? Do you mean their life force or what?

[abnormalizes]

It's more like a byproduct of interacting with them? Their lives aren't in danger, you don't have to worry about that. All the safety risks are to the employees instead.

[leafygreen]

You know, I'd think most people would worry more about employees than monsters. Though I guess it also depends what you mean by monster, like a mindless giant rat or someone like me or a dragon or elf or something. But it's good to hear you care so much about them if you're working with them.

Well, some of them are smarter than others? But they're all further away from 'reasonable person' than you, like most of them are pretty deadly if you don't treat them just the right way. But! I do my best to make sure they're happy and comfortable.

And energy can be harvested from treating them nicely? That sounds fascinating. We have monsters in that sense, but they definitely wouldn't be in a context like that.

That's probably for the best, honestly. We get a ton of energy and money out of it, but the employee mortality rate is... high.

[leafygreen]

I... see. And they just let you do that even though you'll probably die?

[abnormalizes]

Oh, they kill you themselves if you try to quit.

That seems both unfeeling and terribly inefficient.

You'd think so, right?

What do they even gain from that approach?

A lot of money, I guess? I don't know what's going on in the higher-ups' heads.

You'd think someone or something would have cursed them into ruin out of spite by now.

Maybe we just don't have anyone that good at curses?
