Call out one of the characters from my muselist with a starter, a prompt, a general 'hey can we do something with these characters' comment, a smoke signal, etc., and I'll get back to you with some kind of RP thread!
He was intelligent, but it was the kind of intelligent that allowed him to pay no attention in class and coast by on the tests without putting in much effort at all. He had been suspended for a violent incident in his freshman year, and the only reason it wasn't multiple violent incidents is that he was too intimidating - and the rumor mill too efficient - for anyone else to press their luck with him. Even the teachers didn't want to press him too much to participate in class, concerned about their own safety.
Shuji never saw any of that. Akutagawa paid attention, participated in discussions, answered questions. Maybe literature was a more interesting subject to him - but when he asked, the freshman literature teacher said he was just as withdrawn as every other teacher reported.
It probably wasn't the material, so... Shuji himself?
Shuji wasn't so oblivious to know that he was younger than most of the other teachers - only five years older than Akutagawa himself. And he knew he was attractive, because he put great effort into looking good as well as looking professional.
He'd never sought to appeal to the students, but... Well. It wouldn't do to make assumptions. And if Shuji's appeal made Akutagawa actually invested in the class, even better.
When he finds Akutagawa skipping class - not his class, of course - in the library, he clears his throat before he actually thinks of what he's going to say.]
[ tsushima-sensei wouldn't be wrong in his suspicion of akutagawa's main motivator being he himself. the boy was indeed brilliant, and he's never failed a class thus far, but coasting by and letting his potential fall to the wayside in favor of...whatever it is that took up all his attention-- all his teachers agreed it was a shame. the student body knew the story, of course; rumors about the "literature club" and its members were surprisingly spot-on. the members, which akutagawa was among, were part of a gang.
honestly, akutagawa is surprised no one has told tsushima-sensei that little detail, or at least told him to stay away from the students of the literature club, but especially akutagawa. that violent incident last year was only a taste of what he could do.
maybe that's what drew him to his new literature teacher so much, because tsushima-sensei was so kind and sweet and caring to everyone around him, even the unruly akutagawa. as if his reputation didn't matter. the fact he was utterly gorgeous certainly helped in catching his attention.
of course, that didn't automatically mean akutagawa was a model student towards him all the time. at the sound of his name, he cants his gaze up from his book to watch the teacher. ]
[Even if Shuji had been told that Akutagawa was part of a gang, he probably wouldn't have let it stop him. Gang member or not, Akutagawa was a student Shuji wanted to see succeed.
Telling him that he should be in class wouldn't have made any difference - of course Akutagawa already knew he should be in class. Threatening him with detention wouldn't get at the issue. So...]
[ a curious request, but akutagawa knows tsushima-sensei isn't out of touch with reality or just plain stupid. he tries to come off as nonchalant, but akutagawa can't quite take his eyes off his teacher. ]
Feel free. I don't plan to stop you, as I'm sure you have no plan to stop me from being here.
[He knows full well that Akutagawa is skipping, but he shakes his head - no, he has no plans to stop him. He settles in next to Akutagawa, comfortably close but not so close that it would be inappropriate.]
What are you reading?
[He's genuinely interested. Shuji has a way of convincing people of his sincere interest in the things they're doing without it being patronizing - it's what makes him popular with many of the students.]
[ that intrigued look on tsushima-sensei's face is...oddly alluring? akutagawa isn't sure how it makes him feel, but it's pleasant. he permits the closeness because of it, whereas normally he would snap at the other person to mind his personal space. ]
Discourse on Decadence, by Ango Sakaguchi. I saw we would be examining it in the syllabus soon, so I decided to get a head start.
The courage required to pen and publish a piece like this after the war is admirable. The historical context is the most important component to consider when reading this piece, so the argument for Japan's supposed decadence can be made in the first place. Otherwise, it would be easy for someone uninformed to say our current society is decadent without any real thought.
I think it's brilliant, but I doubt the contextual details will be kept in mind by my classmates. Everyone focuses on the writing as it is front of them. The depth escapes them. It's annoying to listen to.
[Shuji listens. Akutagawa's points are good, both in appreciating the context and in decrying his classmates' not paying attention to context.]
If I can get them interested enough in the piece as it is in front of them, they'll go home and learn more about it in a larger context. Thinking about the context is a learned skill - it doesn't come naturally to all of your classmates, not like it does to you.
[It's not the same as saying 'you're smarter than your classmates' - it's alright to acknowledge that they have different strengths and weaknesses.]
Can you tolerate it for half an hour? For my sake if not for theirs.
Your understanding and compassion are wasted on them. Your efforts and talent should be appreciated, but I suppose that's a universal problem all teachers seem to face.
[ akutagawa closes his book and sets it on the table, before fully turning to his teacher. ]
That being said, because you asked so nicely, Tsushima-sensei, I suppose I can find it in myself to sit through class that day. Your enthusiasm for literature, among other things, makes it easy to watch you.
[He thought Akutagawa was attracted to him and prepared himself for comments about his looks. The compliments to his kindness, he hadn't expected, and they warm his heart and his face in equal measure.]
Thank you, Akutagawa. It means a lot to me to hear you say that.
[The words mean more coming from Akutagawa especially, who finds not much reason to pay attention in any other class. If Shuji can get him to engage with his schooling, then becoming a teacher was worth it.]
I should get back to work, I have papers to grade. I'll see you in class tomorrow?
[As usual. Nothing strange about their teacher-student relationship.]
[ of course akutagawa is attracted to him; who wouldn't be after seeing the beautiful way pink dusts tsushima-sensei's cheeks? keeping his expression deceptively taciturn, akutagawa reaches up to give one of his teacher's soft cheeks a brush with the backs of his fingers as if wanting to feel the redness himself. ]
Clearly. You're curiously red, Tsushima-sensei. Doubtless you enjoy hearing praise as much as you like doling out praise to others. Should I compliment you and your teaching more often?
[ nothing inappropriate indeed. not when there isn't anyone else to see them. ]
[Shuji's thoughts freeze solid. It takes a second for him to respond by getting to his feet, out of Akutagawa's reach.
That his cheeks are a darker red now is something that he refuses to acknowledge.]
Only as much as you think appropriate. [There's a stress on the word 'appropriate', as if that was just an innocent mistake Akutagawa made and all he needs is a little reminder to reign himself in.]
Take care, Akutagawa.
[And he's off, hoping none of the faculty sees him and asks why his face is burning.]
[ he watches his flustered teacher all but flee from him, and akutagawa can't help but hum, inquisitive. that was an interesting reaction, one that akutagawa decides he quite likes. consulting it with the members of the literature club yielded a solution that was quite obvious from the beginning.
really, everyone should have done a better job warning tsushima-sensei about him. about akutagawa.
the boy keeps his word, staying for tsushima-sensei's class; his participation is a little lacking today, but mostly because he's openly and unabashedly drinking in his teacher's every movement, offering a challenging raise of his brow or tilt of his head whenever tsushima-sensei dares to meet his gaze.
he keeps his distance for the rest of the day, and even after school he pops into the club room so everyone knows he won't be joining them for the evening's "activities." everyone knows exactly why.
akutagawa was right in banking on tsushima-sensei's staying behind to grade their latest rounds of essays. when he steps into the classroom, he pulls the door shut behind him. ]
[All that Akutagawa promised was to be there for the class, so Shuji can't complain too much that he's more focused on the teacher than the discussion. Shuji glances his way a few times, but the bulk of his focus is on the lesson, and the incident from earlier doesn't get a chance to fluster him during class.
Akutagawa is right about Shuji staying to grade essays - he stays late almost every day, it isn't hard to find him.]
Akutagawa?
[Shuji looks up when Akutagawa enters. The click is audible, but not so loud that Shuji couldn't just be imagining it. He's probably just imagining it with their previous meeting fresh in his mind.]
Good afternoon. What can I help you with?
[Maybe he's just here to talk about extra credit assigments or something like that??]
[ before he approaches his teacher, he takes a few steps over to the large window. with fine and deliberate motions, as if this were all premeditated (and it was, thanks to the counsel of the literature club and mori-sensei), he pulls the blinds and closes the shutters once they fall. after that, he turns his gaze right over to tsushima-sensei. ]
[ and then akutagawa rounds the desk, gaze predatory and startlingly voracious, far too hungry for any regular boy his age. inwardly, akutagawa wonders how his teacher could be so naive as to not at least consider the rumors. of course a boy like him, someone in a gang, wouldn't care about the lack of morality he's about to display. ]
As I said. I only wanted to see you.
[ rather than simply lunge at tsushima-sensei and mount him like a stupid animal, he reaches out to bump the back of his hand against the other man's. ]
You are the only teacher-- the only person I am drawn to enough to trust. Surely, a teacher as kind and understanding as yourself would be willing to spare a moment for a student like me?
[ he lets their fingers brush and twine for a moment, just to see if his teacher will shy away from him. when he doesn't, akutagawa steps between tsushima-sensei and the white board, giving his rolling chair a nudge away from them as his commanding presence until he's trapped tsushima-sensei between himself and his desk. ]
I'm quite taken with you, Sensei. You're quite cute, both in appearance and personality.
[ he reaches up to place a hand in the middle of his teacher's chest. ]
[Shuji isn't stupid enough to miss Akutagawa's intentions, not now. His eyes are wide, his face suffused red even more than at the end of their earlier meeting today. He sets his hand over Akutagawa's on his chest, but he doesn't try to pry him off.]
If you're familiar, then you know that's against the rules too.
You know I'm no fool, Tsushima-sensei. I am very much aware of that.
[ akutagawa decimates the space between them, a knee between tsushima-sensei's legs as their chests touch. akutagawa's hand moves out of the way from between them, but only to take his teacher by the chin, holding his face in place so their gazes can't part. ]
That hardly matters to me. Not when I yearn for you this much. It can be painful at times, Tsushima-sensei. Especially when you show me those cute, flustered expressions of yours.
[Shuji's aware that his face only flushes more when Akutagawa gets a knee between his legs and a hand on his chin. He wants to back up but there isn't anywhere to go - he wants to look away but Akutagawa has trapped his head and Shuji doesn't feel safe enough to close his eyes.
It's amazing how much a fifteen-year-old can scare him, really.]
I don't - I'm sorry for that, it wasn't my intention to lead you on - please don't do this.
[Shuji was never the best at gym class. If he tried to physically push Akutagawa away, he probably wouldn't be successful.]
[ akutagawa huffs, face now so close that he can taste tsushima-sensei's stuttering breaths. ]
As if I could stop now. You say you didn't intend to lead me on, but that's an obvious lie.
[ he presses in close, his chin bumping tsushima-sensei's, a silent threat for an impending kiss. ]
Making a face like that while knowing how much I want you. It seems to me like you're trying to provoke me. Or is this your way of continuing to make me feel special? After all, I'm the only student you would show this face to.
[Shuji wouldn't show this kind of face to anyone else, but no one else would trap him against his desk, a hair's breath away from kissing him. Does that make Akutagawa wrong? Not really.]
...You are special, but not in that way...
[It's a weak protest. Shuji can barely hear himself over his heart pounding.
Nothing he says will make a difference. With that in mind, he looks away from Akutagawa, staring up at the ceiling instead as his hands fall limply to his sides. Maybe Akutagawa will just get this over with.
