[There's a long pause as Dazai leans on him, and buries his face against Odasaku's shoulder.]

Maybe someday they'll be my family, too.

[It's a shame Dazai can't see the beatific smile he's being given for that.]

[He imagines they'd end up in the mafia though...]

Hey... I'll protect them, okay? When I'm the boss.

[wow no? It's a good thing Odasaku doesn't know he's imagining that.]

[No questioning Dazai's intent to depose Mori. No resistance. Just gratitude.

He kisses the back of Odasaku's shoulder.]

I'll love them. I'll be good to them, and to you. You'll never have to worry about anything.

[It wouldn't be good for Dazai, being the boss, but it's inevitable. Like an oncoming tide, or taxes. There's no use fighting.]

I'll do what I can for you.

...But I don't know if I'll be able to call you 'Boss'. Maybe only in public.

[The monster in him will be the only thing left. He tries not to think about it. He's still young enough to pretend like there are some good things in their world.]
