Hm? Y-yeah, it did. [She fidgets slightly and picks up the deck, thinking up a question before shuffling the deck.]

[She finishes shuffling the cards and hands the deck back to her.]

[She deals them facedown.]

[He shuffles without his usual elaborate shenanigans; he's staring at the cards as if he half-expects them to jump out of his hands and start shrieking bad news at him.]

[When he's done, she takes the cards back and deals seven facedown.] What is your question?

[He sits across from her and stares at the cards. It's one of the few good things in his life right now and he wants to make sure it works, ok, it's not on wikipedia as a failure yet.]

(On one hand, I can't help but be reminded of some of the nonsense that duped the unwary in my own world. On the other, given the evidence I've already seen and the circumstances I've found myself in, can I really afford not to investigate? Even learning that it's foolishness would entail learning something of the field in which I'll supposedly excel.)

[Edgeworth side-eyes the girl for that overly cheerful look even as he accepts the deck. With a sigh, he looks down at the cards in his hands, appears thoughtful for a moment, and at length begins to shuffle. Shuffling cards doesn't seem to be something he's particularly practiced with, but he manages; after a minute, he finally offers the deck back.]

[Still with the smile of a practiced entertainer, Eater lays down seven cards.]

Hmm, I'm always interested in unfamiliar forms of divination, if you don't mind another demonstration. There is something of a recent development that's worth examining by such means.

[She nods and hands over the Tarot deck.]

[Althea spreads the cards out in front of her in a small pile, face down, and gently swirls them about while closing her eyes. After a couple minutes she regathers the cards into a stack.]

I seem to have encountered a mystery of late, one that challenges the limits of all knowledge sources I have available to me. The one to whom my query pertains is from a world I know almost nothing about, even if I have some guesses about a few details. I would know, were it possible, what is the nature of the trauma this person has been through, or perhaps simply whether there are unconsidered avenues available to explore that question.

[She slides the deck in Eater's direction with as casual-seeming a demeanor as if she'd just asked for a prediction of the weather.]

[Eater deals out the cards silently and flips them over one by one.]

The past is represented by the Hierophant. A card of education and knowledge, of following the rules, of being in an institutionalized setting.

The present is called to by the Two of Cups. A connection is being formed by this person, or a truce is being called - this card can show a person declaring peace or working together with someone new.

The Six of Cups helps this person. Good will, acting kindly or charitably, having a clear conscience, and being well-intentioned.

The High Priestess is hindering this person. When the High Priestess means withdrawing from involvement and not intervening, the person may need to take more of an active role.

The attitudes of others are shown by the Five of Pentacles. Hard times and ill health - the person may need to step in and help others more.

This person's actions are shown by Strength. Strength is not a card of force, but rather an inner strength, soft control, patience and compassion. The person guides events and works with others.

I think I understand some of it. The past is as I had gathered, to the extent readily discerned; there is little ambiguity to that much of his basic nature. The present situation is as you describe, possibly on more than one level. The six cups card... I could interpret a few different ways, none of them surprising.

The High Priestess... seems the complementary warning to one I have already received... It has become clear that I am treading on some fairly thin ice at this point, and there is definite risk in pushing too hard. I believe this may be a reminder that there is also risk in backing off...

I'm not sure I understand this five pentacles card's implications... it might be helpful to hear more about its symbolic context...

I would say that this person is someone who is very dedicated to law and to truth, but it is also clear that he has committed 'sins' of some sort against that very dedication which trouble him deeply. I do not yet know the details of any such past transgressions, though the prospect of misapplied blame has been invoked...
