Before my mom disappeared, [and his expression immediately does a thing because he was doing so well at keeping the words at bay, too,] she - had to work herself past her limits all the time just to keep the two of us alive, and whenever it got really bad, I would just - try to be whatever I had to be to keep her going. I didn't know back then that was what I was doing. It was just scary. So it's - I know that kind of thing takes it out of you.
