You've awoken in a creepy goth carnival, with a rasping moth man informing you that you've entered a tournament as part of a greater Ritual. The ritual will be complete, and the living returned to their world, when only one participant remains. If no one kills, then Grimm will be forced to provide a little extra incentive to get things moving.

Whether you like it or not, you're part of a murdergame.

[A kindhearted man, if a bit of a doormat. Also a recognizable famous author. Gets weirdly quiet and focused during the executions, but is always available to help with the afterparty.

It comes out that he has a split personality, who takes over during the executions so that Atsushi doesn't have to see them. One week the evidence seems to point towards Atsushi, but Atsushi's been puzzling things out as hard as anyone else and is baffled by how evidence lines up against him - at least until someone points out that he doesn't remember what his other half does, does he?

[Makoto was probably doing something, but got distracted when Grimmchild went to go greet the new arrivals -- okay, go see if any of them would pet them. She shows up sniffing the air and hangs back at the tent door, staring at Atsushi as he wakes up.]

You're dead now?

Like that, yes... although I don't think I'm nearly as interesting as a TV character.

Why'd he even pick us, anyway, even if we did agree to it.

[Which still feels weird to her... then again, it's not like she had a human's capacity to weigh options and make decisions at the time. Not that that's an excuse when one remembers she never had good judgment even when she did.]

[It's late in the game, after Makoto's had her talk with Brumm. The living seem to be figuring some things out, but they don't know the truth yet; the final investigation hasn't launched, after all. Makoto has spent most of her time grumbling, cuddling Grimmchild, eating cabbage buns (the closest thing they have to meat buns, given the animals required don't exist in a world of bugs), and occasionally trying to practise some of the various circus acts they have equipment for when no one's looking and then insisting that she wasn't considering staying and getting a job here or anything, she totally has a really awesome home to get back to.

Today, instead, she finds Atsushi (either, it doesn't matter) by one of the mirrors they use to watch the living. She sits down and watches for a while.]

They found what looks like lyrics to a song about the Ritual? But I don't think they've figured out what it means yet.

Who writes a song about that? [Headscratch.] Are all the lyrics "everyone dies but not really and then Grimm dies for actual?" 'Cause that's what Brumm said it meant. I talked to him and everything.

They're a little more poetic than that. "Burn the father, feed the child." But yes.

Auu... What do you think they're gonna do when they find out? Try and go through with it anyway?

They've been promised a wish after the successful completion of the Ritual, so I think at least a few of them will want to see it through...

[Makoto grumbles.] This whole thing is stupid. Grimmchild shouldn't die, it's cute. But...

[She looks around, instinctively sniffs the air despite the fact that it won't do anything, and whispers.]

Brumm's gonna try and mess up the Ritual 'cause he doesn't want Grimm to die, either. So I dunno if he's leaving stuff for them there or if Grimm did that. You better not tell anyone.

I don't know who'd be okay with dying. Grimm's weird. Did he say that to you?

[It's totally not her fault that most of her conversations with Grimm involved revenge plots.]

Not directly. But we talked about Grimmchild a little - one parent to another. He said that he would do anything to make sure they grew up healthy.

Anyone would do that, obviously. I wanna help them too. They took a nap on me once and it was the cutest thing in the world. I don't want them to die, even if it sucks that we all had to.

Can't someone just invent time travel to punch the ancient people and make them not make the Ritual this way?
