Sorry! I'll try and think of some. I mean, I'm the alien, right? How about... lots of real pets these days are kind of wild so they'll be exotic, right? Like lizards that get stolen out of the jungle, or those foxes they were trying to domesticate so they could study how it happened to dogs in ancient times.

Wouldn't those normally go to the zoo or to biologists or something instead of a shelter? It's bad to keep wild animals in confinement, even more so if they aren't even your pets.

Alien poaching is probably pretty wild, though.

Yeah, probably. Maybe we should just check out the humane society and see what it's like at a real one.

Maybe we can get really crazy and do a little volunteering?

I guess so. I think you have to be 16 to walk dogs there, so we could do that. Or cleaning cages, cat grooming... They went to our school the other week for the volunteer fair, I have a brochure somewhere around here.

I never volunteered as a teenager. I have no idea how I got into college, honestly.

Seriously? I thought it was, like, a requirement. That, good grades, and a dozen afterschool clubs.

Okay, uh... hmm. It says there's a bunch of things you can do. Obviously you don't need parental permission, so since you're an adult, you'd have to get the background check instead. They do that at the police station, right?

I don't know, I've never had one of those done before.

I think they do. It costs money, though. Sometimes your job makes you do it, too, like if you work with people's credit card information or something.

Oh, that makes sense. I've only worked with drinks and budgets before. And writer's block.

I guess that's what this research is for, huh?

Nothing like personal experience to make a story convincing. Or at least give you a decent idea of what's in a space background check.
