[Sorry, did I say vacation? I meant study trip. All studying all the time.

Well, for Cherryblod it's a vacation. Doloz had insisted he needed one, and he can't argue with Doloz. No one can argue with Doloz.

Right now Cherryblod is craning his neck to look up at an Alolan Exeggutor.]

Quite a bit taller than I'm used to.

[Not that he's really used to Pokemon in general, but still.]

[It's a little bit of both! Of course, even on vacation, Colress can't help but find a way to squeeze his scientific curiosity into anything he possibly can. A point of contention between him and Tarrlok for sure...and Cherryblod visiting was the perfect way for him to shove Colress out of the lab for the time being- no wearable console and all.

And to Colress' credit, he's doing his best to keep his smuggled electronic notepad at bay and simply enjoy this time with Cherryblod! It's been so long since he's properly hung out with his good friend, and what better way to spend this cherished time than by seeing what wonders the Pokemon world has to offer?

Their travels have taken them to Exeggutor Island, a locale Colress has yet to visit himself. And it's really been something extraordinary.

He chuckles as he follows Cherryblod's gaze. The Exeggutor's head sways gently in the wind. It's being very chill.]

Likewise, believe it or not! Outside of Alola, Exeggutor are actually much smaller! Granted, they're still a bit taller than you and I, but the difference between the species is quite massive.

[Bless you, Tarrlok, and may your efforts to get Colress to relax bear fruit.

Cherryblod would cherish any time spent with Colress, no matter what the situation. But it helps to be on an island, where Colress feels practically at home.]

Wonder how they diverged so much... Perhaps it's similar to the difference between Doloz and Lobco?

[That is to say, Doloz had an egg with a man far smaller than her, and so her daughter is smaller than her. If large Exeggutors only bred with large Exeggutors, they'd keep that trait through the generations.]

That's a good hypothesis. [From what he knows about Lobco's parentage, at least.] I believe for many Alolan species, it was also a matter of adaptation. Vulpix and Sandshrew, for example, slowly changed their typing over time to better suit that of the mountainous biome they had made their home.

It's not simple in Exeggutor's case, of course... I believe the most widely-accepted hypothesis is the difference in sunlight that Alola gets compared to other regions allows it to grow much taller. Still, now you've got me wondering what the child of an Alolan Exeggutor and Kantonian Exeggutor would look like!

[How are we supposed to refer to that phenomenon when 'evolution' is already taken, Colress.]

Perhaps a medium-sized Exeggutor? Or one with the size of an Alolan Exeggutor and shape of a Kantonian one?

Sure their parents would say they're beautiful no matter what they looked like.

[Surprisingly, Colress doesn't get as embarrassed as Cherryblod might've predicted he would. It's been at least two years since everything that happened in the Vault, so it's only natural that...]

Tarrlok and I have discussed it a few times. [It may come easily, but he still seems a bit bashful about it. It's a really big topic!] We're doing quite a bit of traveling due to the nature of my work, but once we properly settle down...well, I won't say it isn't in the cards.

[And they aren't getting any younger. Colress is well aware that he's going to need to seriously consider finding a more permanent location to work soon.]

[On the one hand, Colress isn't as embarassed as expected - on the other hand, Cherryblod's eyes sparkle at that answer, so probably he isn't too disappointed.]

Wonderful! Wonderful to hear. If you ever are in need of advice, I have a fewer hundred years of parenting behind me, would be tragic if I didn't have anything to offer. Or babysitting if you find yourself in need.

I'm quite sure the Colress of the past would be incredibly surprised to discover he'd one day consider becoming a parent. [The Colress who chose work above all else. The Colress who used to completely prioritize cold hard science over empathy. Because of what he used to be like...] And admittedly, the thought is still overwhelming- I often worry that I am nowhere near qualified for the role.

[Cherryblod gently grips Colress' shoulder. He understands the worries - Doloz has similar ones to this day. But...]

The Cherryblod of the far past would've laughed if you said he was qualified to be a father.

[Obviously that changed. Colress will grow into it like Cherryblod did.]

[It's actually easy for Colress to lose sight of that in regard to Cherryblod. He never knew the Cherryblod of the past, so hearing the stories of what he was like is startling to say the least. It's so hard to picture!]

I'll do everything I can to not betray your confidence. And I suppose no one can be completely prepared for parenthood, so perhaps I'm being a bit hard on myself.

[He says that, but he's still going to study the topic like crazy. It's just how he is.]

[They...never really spoke much of their pasts back in the vault. Circumstances made that kind of tricky. Colress is at least aware of some things about Cherryblod, so he might be able to guess...but he'd rather not jump to conclusions.]

[The smile falls from Cherryblod's face. They haven't had this conversation, and they should, but actually talking about it is still difficult.

But Colress is his best friend. He deserves to know more than most.]

He keeps an even expression and gentle tone, though internally he can't help but feel some concern. He doesn't like seeing Cherryblod like that.]

Colress wasn't in any shape to talk about anything. And with everything going on later, he never really had a good opportunity to ask. But if he wanted to find out more, he'd only ask Cherryblod.]
