Holy Grail War AU Meme.

The HOLY GRAIL WAR Meme
Seven Masters, magi of the present day. Seven Servants, heroes of days past. One Holy Grail, granting whomever claims it a wish. Only one team of Master and Servant may claim it. Who will it be?

For those unfamiliar with Fate/stay night or Fate/Zero, you can find a better explanation of the Holy Grail War here. (Note: The Holy Grail War in Fate/EXTRA functions in a dramatically different way, and one not followed for purposes of this meme.)

Instructions
1. Comment with your character. In the subject line, put that character's name, canon, and which role (Master, Servant, or either) you would like them to fulfill. Add other preferences if you would like. (NOTE: If your character can fill the role of Servant, I suggest you state which class(es) -- Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, or Berserker -- they fall into.)
2. Reply to others' comments. Pick your character's role (and the other character's if they list "Either" as their preference), then use the RNG to pick a scenario that fits the two characters' roles.
3. Enjoy! Though there might be triggers, depending on how the prompts are interpreted.

TWO MASTERS

1. Battle. Who says that Servants get to have all the fun? After all, most Masters try to kill each other, too. Whatever the circumstances, the two of you are locked in a fight. Neither of you are willing to use your Command Spells just yet, so no Servants here. Just two magi duking it out.

2. Alliance. There's a bigger threat out there. Either one Servant is exceptionally powerful, or the situation has changed and the participants need to take action aginst it. One way or another, you're teamed up with one of your rivals for the Holy Grail. How long will this last before you try to stab each other in the back? Or, will something more develop?

3. Protection. Uh-oh! One of you has lost your Servant! Unfortunately, there's no way you'd get to the church safely on your own, so the other one will help you get there! Or maybe you don't trust the priest presiding over the Holy Grail War and are giving shelter to them yourself? Given their track record, no one would blame you.

4. Death. One or both of you lay dying. It might have been by the other's hand, or by someone else's entirely. How will you spend your last moments in the presence of one of your rivals?

5. You, Too? Surprise! You may have been friends before, but you've just discovered that you're both Masters! How will you handle this revelation?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

MASTER AND SERVANT

1. Are You My Master? The summoning is complete. Whether intentional or not, catalyst or not, a magus has summoned a Servant. What kind of meeting was it? Was everything totally under control, or did a hitch occur? Or maybe it happened in the middle of a life-or-death situation!

2. Identity. Either the Servant has flat out told the Master their identity, or they unleashed their Noble Phantasm. Either way, the cat is out of the bag. How will the Master react, now that they know their Servant's name and legend? Will anything change between the two?

3. Battle Aftermath. A battle has just ended. Who participated? Are either of you hurt? Did the Master have to use a Command Spell? Any number of things could have happened here.

4. Discord. Uh-oh. It looks like the Master and the Servant don't get along. Here come the arguments! Don't do something stupid, like waste a Command Spell over a triviality...

5. Love. And then, there's the opposite. Sometimes Masters and Servants fall in love with each other. How will this affect things?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

TWO SERVANTS

1. Battle. This is what usually happens when two Servants meet -- they duke it out. This probably says enough as it is.

2. Alliance. There's a bigger threat out there. Either one Servant is exceptionally powerful, or the situation has changed and the participants need to take action aginst it. One way or another, you're teamed up with one of your rivals for the Holy Grail. How long will this last before you try to stab each other in the back? Or, will something more develop?

3. The Grail Dialogues. Maybe you're not interested in fighting just yet. Maybe you just want to sit down and talk with the other Servant. Find out what they want, what makes them tick. Get some wine while you're at it -- nothing like good wine to go with good talk!

4. Death. One or both of you lay dying...again. It might have been by the other's hand, or by someone else's entirely. How will you spend your last moments in this War in the presence of one of your rivals?

5. Identity. Congratulations, you've just learned each other's identities! Will this change the situation, or will you press onward?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

[He hadn't exactly counted on his master being a woman, not to mention... well, perhaps it was good he wore a mask these days. He wouldn't want her to know the fate that awaited him -- she'd never be able to see the person he was now the same way again, after all.]

[...that didn't make it hurt less, especially since he already knew he'd never stop caring for her.]

[They started on this journey together, Yukiko not fully knowing everything behind the fighting for the Holy Grail. Hell, she doesn't even know what to wish for when they win it all. The idea of killing others is something she never wanted to do, servants included. It was odd for a master to think like that and she knew how naive it was.

But why did she stay in the battle if she didn't care for it? Why push for something that she didn't want?

The answer was the being she did summon. Of course the idea had been a joke and Yukiko was never meant to take the position as Master in this war. Looking through the books, making the spell...she didn't think it would work to be honest. And then he appeared in front of her, sealing the deal. The girl only knew him by the servant title and no matter how many times she asked, he would never give out his name. You know that kind of aura people get and somehow people found it desirable? Well, she could explain like that but it wasn't the reason she felt this way about him. More like his actions that went further than a servant...someone she could talk to when things seemed to be at their worst or try and snap her out of a mess during a fight.

If anything, the reason why she wanted the Grail was to grant his wish. If she wanted something, she would earn it herself. Like now for example: she looked at him, moving closer and reaching out towards that mask.]

May I?

[He reflexively leaned away, not wanting her to do this, and at the same time... he really wanted her to know; to know that he would end up sacrificing so much, so maybe one day she'd stop him.]

[At least, he hoped he could change his own fate. Whether or not he actually could, well...]

...you won't like what you see.

There's a lot of things I've seen and don't like.

[Translation: she doesn't really care about it. Yukiko is a big girl and it would be better to not hide the truth anymore.]

I want to know, Saber.

Master...

[His protest faltered, however, and what other words he wanted to say were stuck in his throat. No, he should know better, even after all this time of being a Servant; once Yukiko set her mind to something, there was no changing it.]

[He didn't move when she reached for him again, letting her remove the mask to reveal his familiar face... in fact, the only thing different from how she knew "him" now was the fact that his eyes had turned red.]

[And then there was quiet.

Except for the clatter the mask made when it fell from Yukiko's hands. How was it possible? She couldn't express the right feeling, the right words right now because there weren't any. This was the face of their leader, the one who made them be stronger than ever before, and the boy she harbored feelings for.

Was it real?]

Yu...kun...

[With a shaky hand, she pressed it against his cheek. It's real. He's real.]

[He tried to keep his expression neutral, but it broke when he felt her hand touch his cheek. He reached up then, pressing his hand over hers, letting his eyes fall closed as he remembered how warm, how loving she was. These were things he would cherish forever, no matter how many other Servants and their Masters he had to kill.]

...I would say it is good to see you again, but you just saw me yesterday.

[...it hurt to say that.]

[If that was him trying to make a joke, it failed epically. It's taking everything she had within her not to cry at the fact that he's been protecting her all this time and trapped in this damn fight.]

How is this possible?

[He moved to reach for her, but thought better of it. This... would be upsetting for her; he didn't want her to be scared or run away from him. Even after all that happened, he couldn't stand to have that happened.]

If I had to guess... because the ceremony you performed to summon a Servant was incomplete. Normally, a catalyst is used, something the Servant used in their life, in order to summon. But... it was just you; your heart called to me across time, and I appeared.

[He was right; she did forget about that one particular piece. But if Saber is Yu but she just saw him, how did this work? Weren't servants heroes that had...died?

So was this Yu from the future where he met with an untimely fate? One when they couldn't save him?]

It can't be...!

[No, she won't run away from him. Yukiko just held on tighter, burying her face into his chest just to stop herself from crying.]

I'm sorry...I'm so sorry!

[Yu hesitated only a moment, before he reached a gloved hand up this time, holding her close. He let his head rest against the top of her head, as he did so often when he was alive, though later in life, when they were so much closer than they were now. Those memories... he held onto them still, even after everything that had transpired, between this conflict and the next, on top of the Shadows and gods and beasts that would threaten the world... He had stood strong against them all, with her at his side, and he...]

It would not be your fault, Yukiko.

[Small comfort, but it was true. He died a hero's death, like so many others that would become Servants, and his name became legend. Even she smiled bravely in the end... though he could not tell her this. It was something she would need to accept for herself.]

Then why does it feel like it to me?

[Her voice kept breaking as she spoke. He's not supposed to die in the heat of battle but in his sleep as an old man with so many loved ones and friends with him. It hurt so much to hear it but like she told him, she won't run away. She can hate it, cry about it, and curse the one who took a precious friend...something more than that but she will never run away. Not anymore.

Couldn't she change his fate? Use her wish for him so that he could live a happy life without any worry?]

You have to understand why I can't tell you more than what I have.

[Yes, he had thought that maybe her wish would change his fate; he had hoped it would, at the very least. But... at the same time, knowing what would happen in the future could be dangerous. If she knew everything, the good, the bad, everything; she would try to change it, possibly destroying everything they had had...]

[He let out a breath, holding her a little closer.]

...just trust in me when I say it is not your fault.

[She can always put her trust in him. But there's a funny little habit that has rubbed off him and on everyone in the team: finding the truth. If she didn't want to know Saber's, no, Yu...she wouldn't have removed the mask. It had to be so heavy for him, to carry such a burden. It made her wonder what led to this and what can she do. He couldn't be happy stuck in this limbo away from those he cared about

Call it childish, selfish, whatever word fit but dammit this was wrong. It was so wrong!]

The future, right?

[It doesn't matter. She'll find a way to save him, future be damned. For once in her life, Yukiko will fight for those she cared about. Was it...love?]

[Yu gave a small nod in response.]

My present, right now, is more important then my past. I... need to serve you, my Master, and make sure you carry through, so I can keep it... and you.

[There was more he wanted to say, but even he was having difficulty doing it. He wanted to say how much he cared for her, and how true it was for the "present" him that she still went to school with. He wanted to say how he never stopped loving her, and it hurt every time he had to leave her to fight. In the future, it was always something... and he would have his responsibilities, while she had hers, and often they ended up apart because of them. He regretted it every day, and that's what made telling her as much so hard to say right now.]

[That title...'Master'...she hated more than ever. Just like she hated 'servant'. He's not Saber...he's Yu. He'll always be Yu and it won't change. She looked up and both his face in her hands, eyes red with tears but there was an expression of determination etched across her own.]

I am not your master, nor are you my servant.

Here and now, you are, and I am to serve and protect you. That is how it is to be in this War.

[He let out a soft sigh.]

I hid my face so you would not forget that... but I suppose I should have known it would come to this.

[What was that phrase some people would say when they didn't care about the problem? I believe it's 'fuck that'.]

Would you have done the same thing if you were in my shoes? I know you: how far you've gone to find the truth without consequence.

[She paused for a moment.]

You'll never be my servant. I told you that before the mask was off. And I mean it.

[Yu regarded her calmly for a moment, his expression that usual mask of what his real emotions were. It was a long moment before it finally broke, the barest of smiles coming to his face.]

...yes, I would have done the same.

[After a moment, though, he shook his head.]

If you will not consider me a servant, then remember at least what you are involved in, and continue to call me Saber. It would not take much for any of your opponents to come to the right conclusion, and target my present self instead of me.

I...understand.

[You're such an idiot. Both of you; present and future. Whoever ends up with you must have their hands full.]

I will keep that in mind then. Just as long as I can call you by your name when there's no fighting.

[Now how will the rest of the team find out about this?]

[Yes, you did have your hands full. You always made sure he knew it too. Yu smiled faintly at that, giving a nod of agreement, before he pulled her close again. He could have this much, right? It had been so long...]

[He made it hard not to kiss him or do something. Hell, she didn't even make any moves on him in the present because she's too afraid to do so.

~~Would it be wrong to do it?~~]

[He smiled faintly, letting his eyes fall closed. Being this close, being with her... it hurt, it brought back memories that... well...]

I will tell you this. I never stopped loving you.

[Did he just..?!

There was no way she imagined him saying that, was there? Does he care for her in that way? To be honest, Yukiko thought he liked Rise or Naoto because they seemed to be the kind of girls he would go for. But that confession just now floored her.]

Yu-kun...!

[She went completely red in the face. No way this was a dream!]

[Yu smiled faintly, a bit of a devilish glint in his red eyes.]

Oh, I didn't tell you yet?

[Well, maybe he knew that. Maybe.]
